6. Next, click and hold down the shift key and make a horizontal line where the images overlap.

7. You should get something like this:

8. To make the blending transition more harsh and noticeable, simply make the gradient line shorter, like so:

9: This is what it will look like:

10. Now you can nudge (Up Arrow) the image back up.

11. Then crop, and there ya go! Simple and effecting technique that takes only a few minutes.

Thank you SO much! i have always wondered how to do those blends - others tried to explain, but i soon became all confused and stuff…thanks a LOT (by the way - its similar in the CS/CS2/CS3 interfaces right…there’s no lazier tool to make it easier?)

I’m using Photoshop 7.0, and I can’t get this to work at all. The “Add Layer Mask” thing gives me two choices, Hide All and Reveal All, and I’ve tried both of them. Also I have these choices on the gradient tool: “Reverse,” “Dither” and “Transparency.” I’m lost; it either does nothing at all, or one side of the photo gets shaded into white or black (depending on what my foreground color is).
Suggestions?

Thanks for a great tutorial.
Unfortunately, like MadMolecule, I have the same problem in CS2. Any help?

@MadMolecule
You have to create a new document before everything else by going to File - New… and then move the images there.

I am using CS3 and I am having the same problem as MadMolecule. Can you please go more in depth with the process using the Gradient tools? Which options do you use? I’ve even tried to make my own gradients and it still didn’t work.
Please explain.

i think to solve the above problems, you simply have to move your images to a new document and SAVE it as a .psd document. and the gradient tool should work beautifully afterwards on the saved .psd document. hope it works!
